In light of recent leadership and organizational changes, the team wanted to discuss how to improve team communication and collaboration.

They struggled with communicating project requirements and weren’t aligned on processes. This led to missed deadlines, re-work, and frustration among team members.

Despite their struggles, the team had a great culture and tons of potential. They just needed to step back from the daily grind and learn some best practices for communication and collaboration.

Workshop Overview

It was my pleasure to spend the morning with this fun and engaged group of engineers at WGI. One of my favorite things about running workshops is that teams face similar problems, and the solutions are applicable across industries. This team was a perfect example of that.

The Challenge: Communication and Collaboration Issues

In just three hours, we achieved the following:

  • Reflect on Team Progress: Identified what was moving the team forward and potential areas of concern.
  • Hands-on Collaboration: Learned best practices for collaboration in an interactive manner.
  • Establish Team Principles: Identified team principles to ensure the team continues to work efficiently and effectively.
  • Team Lunch: Enjoyed a team lunch 😄.
  1. Establish new team leadership
  2. Learn best practices for collaboration through hands-on experience

Key Activities and Best Practices

As the facilitator and collaboration consultant, I met with team leadership several times before the workshop to understand background information and agree on workshop goals.

From there I crafted the agenda, ensuring the team would gain actionable next steps within the time they had.

Workshop Goals

My favorite part of the day was a “pizza-making” activity that I adapted from this agile game. “Pizzas” were made using paper, but don’t worry—we fed the team real pizza at the end! 🍕 Unlike traditional team-building activities, which may or may not translate to working together, this was educational while introducing some friendly competition.

In two different rounds, team members experienced what happens when a project is set up for success and when it’s not. Plus, I learned that if you ask a group of engineers to create “pizza” out of paper, they will find the most efficient way to do so (read: all the pizzas and toppings were rectangular).

This team alignment workshop addressed immediate communication and collaboration challenges and provided long-term value by establishing effective practices and principles. The hands-on activities and engaging format ensured that the team could apply what they learned directly to their work processes, leading to noticeable improvements quickly.

By incorporating these strategies and best practices, your team can experience improved communication, collaboration, and efficiency. Contact me today to learn more!
